What Your Blood Pressure Numbers Really Mean and Why Healthy Targets Don’t Simply Change With Age

Population averages may increase with age, but an average isn’t necessarily a healthy target. Blood-pressure goals are individualized according to overall health, medications, cardiovascular risk, and other factors. Children are different as well: their readings are generally interpreted using age, sex, and height rather than simply applying adult standards.

Several factors can contribute to rising blood pressure over time, including reduced arterial flexibility, excess body weight, physical inactivity, high sodium intake, certain medical conditions, and lifestyle factors. Fortunately, many of these risks can be addressed. A heart-healthy eating pattern, regular exercise, healthy weight management, avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, adequate sleep, and stress management can all support healthier blood pressure.

Home monitoring can also be valuable. For a more accurate measurement, sit quietly for about five minutes beforehand, keep your feet flat on the floor, support your arm at heart level, and avoid exercise, smoking, and caffeine for at least 30 minutes before checking. A properly fitting upper-arm cuff is important, and repeated readings are more informative than one isolated measurement.

Consistently elevated readings should be discussed with a healthcare professional. A reading above 180/120 mmHg should be repeated after a brief rest; if it remains that high, prompt medical guidance is needed, and symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, or vision changes warrant emergency care. High blood pressure isn’t simply something everyone should accept with age—knowing and monitoring your numbers can help protect your heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels.
